Lavender Lipstick

He told her to wear the lavender lipstick.
She wanted to wear rose.
He insisted.
So did she.
He won that round.

He told her to wear the rose dress.
She wanted to wear lavender.
He insisted.
So did she.
She won that round.

And so on and on their battles waged.
Over small things.
Never the big, important ones.
Never the most important one.

She wanted him to stop drinking.
But she never told him so.
She waited for him to come to that conclusion.
She waited for him to want to stop.

He told her to wear her hair up.
She wanted to wear it down.
He insisted.
So did she.
He won that round.

And she continued to wait.
She would always wait.
Even as they waged war
Over lavender lipstick and rose dresses.
