Nightmarish Newts

I can’t sleep.

I can’t.

If I do, they’ll appear. Climbing over me. Crawling all over me.

Their long, cold bodies twirl around my ankles. Their cold feet split splat up my bare arms and scurry up to my shoulders. Their tails tickle my spine as they race down my back.

Their inhuman voices whisper amphibian words in my head as I try to sleep. Words that I half-understand, half-misunderstand. And it scares me.

I can’t sleep.

I can’t sleep.

I don’t want to feel them on me, all over me. I don’t want to hear their almost human whispers.

I can’t sleep.

I won’t sleep.

If I don’t sleep, they can’t get me.

So, I’ll stay awake and I’ll be safe.

I’m safe.

I’m awake so I’m safe.

What is that?

Something’s touching me!

What is it?

I can hear it.

I can feel it.

I need to wake up.

I need to wake up!

Someone wake me up!

Make this nightmare end!

Someone help me!
