The Shadow Monsters

The shadow monsters creep in.
They seep in
Through the closed windows and
Through the solid floor.

They stick close to the walls and
Scale the ceilings and
Plaster themselves to the floor.

They skimper and scamper
They slide and skid
Silently through closed bedroom doors.

And it doesn’t matter if
You put salt all over the floor
You hang honeyed garlic from the ceiling
You wear onion flowers around your neck.

They will come in
As silent as steam
As insidious as a dream.
As steady as a nightmare.
As you sleep.
